Phonological Awareness
Kindergarten and first-grade children who do not understand how spoken language can be analyzed by syllables and sounds are at risk of reading failure. They will have trouble “cracking the code” of written English. Reading Accuracy
BeginningReads by Elfrieda Hiebert is a fantastic resource for emergent readers. The ten books in this series starts with the very beginning of word recognition, using text to picture matches, and progresses to second grade level. If you want to create physical copies of the 10 BeginningReads books, the digital pages are free for download at www.textproject.org. We have created a storybook-style PowerPoint of each book for teaching BeginningReads online, available for download on the right. The first video below, Teaching BeginningReads Online demonstrates how to use our protocol, Guided Oral ReReading, to ensure that children at risk of reading failure and those who are English learners learn to read with BeginningReads.
A key component of our Guided Oral ReReading protocol for BeginningReads is Word Study. Each book level includes a page of target words, which can be sent to students for online word work, following the procedure demonstrated in the video Teaching Word Study Online.
Another idea for online word study lessons, cookie tins and magnetized word cards, ensures that students can display their work online, as illustrated in the two images on the right. (NOTE: Cookie Tin1 and Cookie Tin2)
